Found in a pawn shop, this little Supro amp came with the basic “it’s an old amp, make it safe” request.  This is a very early Supro amp, originally made during the 50’s (*we think*).  The power supply was recapped, dropping resistors changed, and the tube sockets tensioned and cleaned. The stock sound was a bit wimpy though as the input tube was a 6SQ7 (Dual Diode / Single Triode), so basically it had one gain stage (Grid Leak Biased).  The owner requested I make it bigger and more interesting sounding, so in an effort to keep the design “era consistent”, the preamp tube was changed to a 6SJ7 (Octal Pentode) which has more gain than a single triode (even a Hi-Mu one like the 6SQ7) and has a very old american sound to it.  Tapered top end and a complex midrange, it complements the amp well.  It has what we think is the stock speaker, an Old Rola AlNiCo.

I know recapping your old Ampeg amp costs some money, and I understand times are tough for all… But here’s a little lesson of what can happen when can caps get unhappy…

Also I’ve got a bunch of cool amps in the shop that I’m going to try to do a little photo-blogging on the work I’m doing on them. I’m still trying to get the site to the point where doing that is an easy process. stay tuned…

Please call ahead to schedule repairs, but understand right now that we are only working on hand wired tube gear and small format analog synthesizers.  No more Farfisas!  (at least not right now… I am out of space!)

I’ve got an absolute smörgasbord of pictures to upload…  I’m gonna get on that! 

I’ve been playing drums like a madman these days though…
